Which Downtown Austin Hotel Is Right For You?

Austin has long been a dream destination of ours, so we wanted to check off as many items from our bucket list as we could on our first trip. When considering accommodations our priority was clear: location, location, location. Downtown Austin is the place to be, but the options can be overwhelming. Choosing the right home away from home can make all the difference, so here’s how to make sure you pick the right one for you.

Aloft Austin Downtown

Aloft has had a presence in Austin but recently opened a new location in the heart of downtown. When we say “the heart of downtown”, it’s not simply a turn of phrase. The hotel is caddy-cornered to the Contemporary Austin and offers a clear view up the street of the stunning State Capitol building. The property has an electric vibe. Meeting up with some friends in Austin? Host them at Upstairs at Caroline, which makes you question what a hotel bar should look like. Play Giant Jenga or Foosball while you sample local craft beers.

Element Austin Downtown

Element, which shares a space with Aloft, is geared towards a more laid-back, relaxed customer looking to maximize the room’s functionality. Whether you’re staying for a day or a month, you’ll find comfort in the fact that you can return home to an inviting room fitted with a kitchen and a workspace. Enjoy a complimentary after-work reception with snacks and beverages, as well as breakfast in the morning. Unpack and unwind.

Pro Tip: Since Element and Aloft reside in the same building, there are shared amenities that customers from each hotel will also have access to, which is a unique perk. Element guests can still enjoy Upstairs at Caroline, while Aloft guests can make use of the fitness center and guest laundry.

Westin Austin Downtown

Westin Austin Downtown marries hip and funky with classic and luxurious. The lobby and in-house restaurant Stella San Jac are impressive. But the Azul Rooftop is enough to justify a stay here. It offers stunning views of the city as well as its neighbor, the Frost Bank Tower. Soak in the pool, or lounge in the poolside cabanas. Groove to a live DJ on Saturday nights. Get your namaste on with rooftop yoga on Tuesday mornings.

  1. Yoga, bars, pools, killer views? I am loving all this rooftop action in Austin! Sounds like the perfect getaway. And I agree about hotels making or breaking a trip – for longer trips I usually stay in AirBnB’s, but they are super hands-off and sometimes it is soooo nice to have a concierge and room service to take some of the stress of trip planning off of you!

    1. For sure Austin has a cool vibe, and we’ll definitely be revisiting.

As for AirBnB’s, they certainly have their place in the trip-planning conversation, but I think you summed it up perfectly, it’s the hands-on service and individual attention that really differentiates the two. And sometimes, like this particular trip, you just want everything taken care of for you.

  2. Electric vibes and craft beers sound like the best way to live it up in Austin. I like the sound of Element though. A kitchen in the room sounds up my alley…the thought of relaxing with a nice breakfast in the room with the eggs done the way I like it and more 🙂

    1. Agreed. I particularly like the idea of access to a kitchen for a long weekend or extended stay. The hotel has a nice little pantry for some kitchen basics, but we also really liked Royal Blue Grocery, a thoughtfully curated local urban market around the corner from the hotel. Between the two, you would want for very little. I actually can’t say enough about Austin in general. If you haven’t been, you should go.
