The Flag Project is a public art installation showcasing flag designs hung from the 192 flagpoles surrounding the Rink at Rockefeller Center. Though a number of the designs come from established artists, the majority of the designs come from the general public.
The Flag Project received more than a thousand online and mail-in submissions from across the country and around the world. Some of the more famous contributors include Carmen Herrera, Christian Siriano, Faith Ringgold, Hank Willis Thomas, Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, KAWS, Laurie Anderson, Marina Abramović, Sanford Biggers, Sarah Sze, Shantell Martin, and Steve Powers.
Though all of the designs equally incorporate the project's guidelines and templates, that's not where their similarities end. Each work shares inspiration from the city's unique diversity, energy, and strength. Above all, this project reflects a deep and abiding love for New York City.
The installation is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
