Summer Streets is a multi-day, annual car-free event. The Department of Transportation’s eagerly anticipated program offers residents and visitors alike the opportunity to travel from the Brooklyn Bridge to East Harlem three consecutive Saturday’s in August. The event’s purpose is to provide space for healthy recreation and encourage New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation.
Along the route, participants will find the usual unobstructed lanes for cycling, running and walking, as well as Rest Stops with booths and installations from innumerable city agencies, organizations, and companies offering free activities, performances, demonstrations and products. Highlights this year include:
Taste of Summer at Astor Place with brands like Café Grumpy, Vitaminwater and Mike’s Hot Honey offering samples of tasty snacks and beverages
Fitness classes at Cooper Square like Vinyasa Yoga by Just Like Om and Weigh2Dance by Athleta
