There is an unspoken bond that exists between New Yorkers. No matter who we love or where we worship, we share triumphs and tragedies, delights and annoyances, as we carve our space in this sprawling metropolis. In our rush to get to the next meeting, meal, or errand, we often take this city for granted. But every once in a while, it’s nice to be reminded that, for better or worse, we’re part of something bigger. The Living Portrait of NYC does just that.
What is the Living Portrait of NYC?
The Living Portrait of NYC is an immersive exhibit that captures the essence of life in New York City through its inhabitants. Everyday New Yorkers tell their stories, which are shared with visitors in four fun, interactive and captivating rooms. A data visualization display elicits nods (“58% think texting while walking is a problem in NYC”) and chuckles (“55% will avoid a subway car if it’s empty”). An auditory experience shares fun only-in-New York snippets. A video display captures our familiar city landscape and mixes it with more experiences. And finally, you have a chance to participate by answering a series of questions and having your portrait become part of a live digital mosaic.
In addition, the artists who are the lifeblood of this city – from subway dancers to Moth storytellers – will perform live at scheduled intervals throughout the exhibit’s run.
When can I visit the Living Portrait of NYC?
The exhibit is slated to run for 10 days only, from September 18 to September 27.
How much does it cost to visit the Living Portrait of NYC?
It’s completely FREE! You still have to request timed tickets, though.
