Ushering in the Year of the Horse, Chinatown will hold its annual Firecracker Ceremony at Sara D. Roosevelt Park. In Chinese astrology, each year is associated with one of the twelve zodiac animals and one of the five elements. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, which combines the zodiac sign of the Horse with the element of Fire. A Fire Horse year occurs every 60 years, and intensifies a Horse's natural traits: independence, enthusiasm, and speed.
Please note: This is NOT the Lunar New Year Parade. The Firecracker Ceremony takes place on the actual Lunar New Year and is a smaller celebration, while the larger NYC Lunar New Year Parade will follow a few weeks later on March 1, 2026. The Firecracker Ceremony & Cultural Festival will feature firecrackers, fireworks and lion dancers. The event is FREE to attend.
If you’re planning on attending this event, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the multitude of cool spots in Chinatown, from artisanal coffee shops to an awesome rooftop bar!
