The New York City Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival is an annual tradition, with roots tracing back to the 1870's. Unlike the Halloween Parade or Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Easter Parade has a much more casual and laid-back vibe. There’s no need to arrive at 6:00 am to secure a spot, revelers trickle in when they please. In our experience, the crowd starts to build around 10:00 am, and by noon, the atmosphere is pretty lively.
Parade-goers celebrate the day in colorful, one-of-a-kind ensembles, but the highlight is usually the incredibly imaginative Easter Bonnets. All are welcome at the family-friendly event, so it’s common to see kids and pets join in the fun. In fact, some of the most creative costumes have been family or group ensembles! The festivities fill all of 5th Avenue from 49th Street all the way up to 57th Street. However, our preference is to hover around St. Patrick's Cathedral, where many of the participants pose for photos at the gorgeous church and discuss their amazing outfits with admirers. The festive event exemplifies New York City's fun-loving, creative side. Don’t miss it!
