Background

The Bus Festival, hosted by the New York Transit Museum, has become a beloved tradition for transportation enthusiasts and families alike. (The New York Transit Museum is also behind one of our favorite seasonal events, the Holiday Nostalgia Train Ride.) This event showcases a curated selection of vintage buses from the museum's collection, providing a nostalgic glimpse into the evolution of public transportation in the city. The festival not only celebrates the rich history of New York's transit system but also aims to educate visitors about its significance and future.

What to Expect

  • Vintage Bus Exhibit: The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the vintage bus exhibit. Visitors can step aboard a variety of meticulously restored buses, each with its own unique story and charm. From the classic designs of the early 20th century to the more modern models of the late 1900s, these buses offer a fascinating look at how public transportation has changed over the decades.

  • Education Tent: For budding transportation enthusiasts, the Education Tent is a must-visit. Pick up a scavenger hunt activity sheet and test your knowledge of the city's transit history. This interactive experience is perfect for kids and adults alike, making learning fun and engaging.

  • NY Transit Museum Store Pop-Up: Don't forget to stop by the New York Transit Museum Store pop-up shop. Here, you can find a variety of transit-themed merchandise, including model buses, toys, and other unique souvenirs. It's a great opportunity to pick up a keepsake to remember your day at the festival.

  • Membership Perks: Learn about the benefits of becoming a member of the New York Transit Museum. Membership includes perks such as one year of free admission to the museum, special event invitations, and more. Plus, if you register in advance for the festival, you'll be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a Family membership valued at $100!
